The james gillingham digital exhibition

Welcome to The James Gillingham Digital Exhibition, a journey into the life, work and legacy of one of Chard’s most remarkable innovators. Born in 1839 and rising from the family shoemaking business, James Gillingham became a pioneering creator of artificial limbs (prosthetics), blending technical ingenuity with compassion in an era when such innovations were rare.

Through a series of thematic sections — from “Introducing James Gillingham” and “Victorian Life” to “Spiritualism,” “Astonishing Inventor,” “First Leap Into Prosthetics,” “Old Limbs for New,” “Gillingham’s Legacy,” and “Jake’s Story” — the exhibition weaves together photographic archives, personal narratives, and historical context. Chard Museum As you explore, you will gain insight both into the technological challenges Gillingham confronted and the social environment of Victorian Chard. You will also see how his work resonated beyond his lifetime — in medicine, in social welfare, and in local memory.
